From the face of celebrity movie actress Marilyn Monroe to a humble can of soup. Andy Warhol’s collection is an inspiring variety of now-iconic images. At the time of his death Warhol was working on the series, “Cars”. Warhol always had a fondness for cars, he could be considered a true connoisseur despite never having learned to drive.
He began his work in advertising before becoming an artist and later developed into what he dubbed a “business artist.”
Being a “Bussines artist” Mercedes-Benz had commissioned a project to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of its brand, depicting various Mercedes-Benz models throughout the years. Warhol completed 36 silkscreen prints and 13 drawings of eight different Mercedes models before his passing. Warhol had originally planned to cover 20 models in 80 pieces. Warhol’s work consisted of a 1937 Mercedes-Benz W125 Grand Prix car, a W196 Formula One car from 1954 and a 1970 C111-II prototype car with Wankel engine, a W198 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing from 1954, an 1885 Benz Patent-Motorwagen and an 1886 Daimler Motor Carriage.
His unfinished series, “Cars”, managed to create high art from the image of the Mercedes-Benz brand.
