After relying on privateers for the 2.5-16’s motorsport ventures, Mercedes officially entered the 1988 Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM) season. The outgoing 23/2 unit gave way to the new Type M 102 E 25/2 engine, having an increased cubic capacity from 2299cc to 2498cc. Notably, the production of the cylinder head shifted in-house at Mercedes-Benz, moving away from Cosworth in England. Despite this change, the engine maintained its dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, and mechanical valve lifters.
